Digital currencies in Sweden: A brief update in light of a fresh legal research paper

In September 2021, Eversheds Sutherland published a guide on the current state of the central bank digital currencies contemplated by, amongst others, Sweden (also generally referred to as ‘digital fiat currencies’ or ‘digital base money’).

The Swedish case has taken a leap forward recently with the publishing of a legal research paper that dwells on the subject of the Swedish so called ‘digital e-krona’ as well as certain crypto-assets. The analysis and conclusions contained therein will most certainly serve as important benchmarks for, inter alia, future legislation in relation to the digital e-krona and are summarized by us in a briefing available here.
