Former MTC Executive Director Joins Eversheds Sutherland SALT TeamMarch 03, 2026 Washington, DC | Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that Greg Matson, the former Executive Director of the Multistate Tax Commission (MTC), has joined the firm as Counsel in its State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice Group. Greg has decades of experience working on the thorniest state tax issues while representing taxpayers and states. That experience, coupled with his skills as an advocate and advisor, will form the basis of Greg’s counsel to our clients. Greg’s legal career has spanned military service, the Internal Revenue Service, the District of Columbia’s Office of Tax and Revenue, the Tax Executives Institute (TEI) and the Multistate Tax Commission. Greg’s work at TEI and the MTC is particularly noteworthy as it provided Greg with a perspective few gain. Greg was TEI’s first state tax counsel. While there, Greg represented Fortune 500 companies on cutting edge issues. Greg solicited the views of the TEI members and harmonized state tax positions across companies and industries. He authored amicus curiae briefs at the US Supreme Court. Greg also provided testimony on state tax issues that are important to TEI members. And, it is worth noting that Eversheds Sutherland alum Todd Lard serves in that role today. Greg then joined the MTC as its Deputy Executive Director. Doing so provided Greg with an entirely different perspective. He worked with state tax commissioners, state attorneys general, and leaders of state audit groups to understand and harmonize the positions of the states on various tax issues. His meteoric success at the MTC made him the obvious choice to become its next leader. As Executive Director of the MTC, Greg oversaw the organization’s staff, including its legal team. In addition to growing the size and scope of its legal staff, Greg grew the MTC’s membership. Every state now participates in the MTC. This achievement underscores Greg’s leadership and his understated approach to building consensus around the most vexing state tax issues of the day. State and local taxes have grown in complexity, leading to growing disputes and significant policy debates. Greg will assist Eversheds Sutherland’s SALT team as a state tax advisor who can plot a strategy no matter how complicated or challenging. His experience working with taxpayers and states will add to the depth of our experience in navigating state tax controversies. "We are thrilled to welcome Greg to Eversheds Sutherland and our Tax team," said Robert Chase, Tax Practice Group Leader (US). "As states continue to pursue aggressive enforcement and policy changes, Greg’s experience and relationships with state tax authorities will significantly enhance our ability to deliver practical, strategic solutions for clients. His insight into state tax administration and policy will be a tremendous asset as we help businesses navigate this evolving landscape." "Greg is one of the most respected voices in the state tax community," said Jeffrey Friedman, Head of the SALT Practice Group. "I am absolutely over the moon to have my friend of 25 years join us. Greg is a humble advisor – often guiding a position without taking the credit or limelight. He is a careful listener and a thoughtful lawyer. I am looking forward to admiring his representation of our clients in the years ahead.” Greg’s arrival further strengthens Eversheds Sutherland’s ability to deliver innovative, practical solutions to businesses facing multijurisdictional tax challenges. In 2025, the firm significantly expanded its tax capabilities with the addition of 29 attorneys whose work spans a range of tax areas—including employee benefits, federal, international, and SALT matters—further reinforcing its position as a leading adviser on complex US tax issues. That momentum continued into 2026 with the return of Taylor Kiessig to the firm from the IRS, as well as the promotion of three tax attorneys to Partner: Jeremy Gove and Chelsea Marmor in the firm’s New York office, both focused on SALT matters, and Brian Tschosik in Washington, who advises clients on international tax planning and cross‑border transactions.
