Eversheds Sutherland advises Amprion on the award of the operation of a decentralised grid booster to EDF RE Speicherprojekte 1 GmbH & Co. KGFebruary 04, 2026 Eversheds Sutherland advised German power transmission system operator Amprion GmbH (Amprion) on the award of the contract to operate the decentralised Netzbooster battery storage project in Bavarian Swabia to a subsidiary of EDF power solutions Deutschland GmbH. The grid booster, consisting of five battery storage systems with a total capacity of 250 megawatts, is intended to support electricity transmission in the Amprion grid from northern to southern Germany from 1 January 2028 and help to reduce costs in congestion management. When the grid booster is not needed to stabilise the transmission grid, it can be used to relieve the regional electricity grid of LEW Verteilnetz GmbH. In addition to these grid-serving functions, the EDF subsidiary can generate market-based revenue with the battery storage systems. Dr Martin Weitenberg, Partner, Energy Law, at Eversheds Sutherland, explains: ‘This decentralised infrastructure project shows how innovative storage solutions can strengthen grid stability, reduce costs and support the energy transition. We are delighted to have advised Amprion on this first project of its kind in Germany.’ The Eversheds Sutherland team was led by Dr Martin Weitenberg (Partner, Energy Law, Düsseldorf) together with Dr Arndt Scheffler (Counsel, Energy Law, Munich) and Dr Daniel Giese (Senior Associate, Energy Law, Düsseldorf).
